Description

One of the rarest trees in Vietnam, Aesculus wangii is found in a restricted mountainous area to the far north where it is threatened primarily from cardamon plantations. This species possesses the largest seed (conkers) of all Aesculus and displays beautiful autumn color. The seeds are NOT edible and not to be confused with true Chestnuts. (they are not poisonous though are considered unpalatable) The seeds offered are the first progeny of a garden grown specimen planted in 2007 in Washington state, and the first tree of its kind to fruit in North America; the original seed was collected from the wild under permit. The seeds must be sown immediately upon falling from the tree and germination begins in only 2-5 weeks. The very easy and straightforward sowing instructions will be provided with each shipment of 3 extremely fresh seed, sent in moist sphagnum to guarantee they arrive in perfect condition. Upon germination, the seed should be kept in a cool, bright location during the first winter (a bright window indoors or in a cool greenhouse , then planted out in the spring in full or partial sun with draining soils. Saplings will be 2.5'-3.5' by September of 2025.
