Description

Antique (late 1880s - 1920s) Moroccan multi-color ceramic lidded jar is from the Berber Tribes of Morocco. It is handcrafted in the Moorish style with fine filigree nickel work. This particular specimen is uncommonly large and with an unusual amount of hand-tooled nickel - definitely worthy of a museum collection. This decorated earthenware piece is a striking example of a 19th-century Moroccan jobbana. Traditionally accompanied by a domed or bell-shaped lid with a finial top, these vessels were originally used to store butter and cheese or to churn milk. The name, jobbana, derives from the Arabic "jubna" (cheese). The exterior of the bowl is decorated with ornamental motifs characteristic of ceramicware from Fez and Meknes. Interior signs of wear from a trivet and its original as-found condition suggest that this was a working vessel. In very good used condition with no cracks or repairs, but some small chips and wear marks around the rim. The base sits with a small list to one side (please see photos).

The box had a hole in it, but each glass piece was individually wrapped in multiple layers and I think it would have taken a bomb to damage it! Seller is very nice, and I would definitely buy from this shop again.

  3. This is much bigger and more beautiful IRL than as described. I use it with candles and it is stunning! Shipping was quick and packaging was very secure and padded. It was an excellent value, especially since I was expecting something much smaller. Would definitely recommend this seller!
