An original work of art in fine porcelain, "The Magic Grove" by Clarence Wilson depicts a magical garden in which the flowers glow in jewel-like colors, the sky is serene and cloudless, and a baby panda frolics in a sunlit bamboo grove high in the mountains. The vivid color of the peonies, the richness of the panda's fur and the fresh green of the grass are enhanced by the sheen of fine porcelain. Richness of color and translucence made works of art in porcelain highly prized during the past centuries. In Holland during the late 16th century, for example, porcelain houses were creating landscape and portrait plaques to hang as wall deco-rations. The subjects of these works suggest that skilled artists had been commissioned to create their designs. The use of decorative wall plaques soon spread to other European countries and to England as well, where flowers and ships became popular subjects. Porcelain may have been most admired in Italy, however, where entire rooms in such palaces as the Royal Villa at Portici were lined with decorative tiles. Among porcelain's unique properties is the fact that it never loses the richness and appeal of its colors. ABOUT THE ARTIST Born in Canada, Clarence Wilson studied art at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto and at the Art Institute in Chicago, Illinois. He was employed as a designer for the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Canada and has worked and traveled in Japan, India England and South Africa. Now a resident of New York, he has earned international acclaim for the superb quality of his work.
